Sodi ~ ሰዲ: “Sodi” means intimate (ወዳጅ), SBD, the father of Geddiel, the
spy selected from the tribe of Zebulun. (Num 13:10)
Sodom ~ ሰዶም: The name “Sodom” means their secret;
their cement, HBN, a city in the vale of Siddim (Gen
13:10; 14:1-16). The wickedness of its inhabitants brought down upon it fire
from heaven, by which it was destroyed (Gen 18:16-33; 19:1-29; Deut 23:17).
Solomon ~ ሰሎሞን: The name ‘Solomon’ is derived from ‘Sle’ (ስለ) and ‘Aman’ (አማን) ፥ the meaning is ‘peaceful’.
David's second son by Bathsheba, i.e.,
the first after their legal marriage, (2 Sam 12:24, 25)
Sopater ~ ሱሲጳጥሮስ: The name “Sopater” means who defends the
father (ጋሻጃግሬ), HBN, son or Pyrrhus or Berea, was one of the companions
of St. Paul on his return from Greece into Asia. (Act 20:4)
Sophereth ~ ሶፌሬት: The name “Sophereth” means scribe,
numbering (ስፍረት), HBN, "The children of Sophereth"
were a family who returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel among the descendants
of Solomon's servants. (Ezr 2:55; Neh 7:57)
Sorek ~ ሶሬቅ: The name “Sorek” means vine; hissing; a
color inclining to yellow (ወይን ጠጅ), HBN, the name of a valley, i.e., a torrent-bed, now the Wady
Surar, "valley of the fertile spot," which drains the western Judean
hills, and flowing by Makkedah and Jabneel, falls into the sea some eight miles
south of Joppa. This was the home of Deliah, whom Samson loved (Jud 16:4).
Sosthenes ~ ሶስቴንስ: The name “Sosthenes” means savior;
strong; powerful (አዳኝ), HBN, the chief ruler of the synagogue at Corinth, who was seized
and beaten by the mob in the presence of Gallio, the Roman governor, when he
refused to proceed against Paul at the instigation of the Jews (Act 18:12-17).
Sotai ~ ሶጣይ: “Sotai” means changeful (ተለዋዋጭ), SBD, The children of Sotai were a
family of the descendants of Solomon's servants who returned with Zerubbabel.
(Ezr 2:55; Neh 7:57)
Spain ~ እስጳንያ: The name “Spain” means rare; precious (ውድ), HBN, Paul expresses his intention (Rom 15:24, 28) to visit Spain.
Stachys ~ ስንጣክን: The name “Stachys” means spike or ear of
corn (ስንጣቂ), HBN, a Christian at Rome, saluted by St. Paul
in the Epistle to the Romans. (Rom 16:9)
Stephanas ~ እስጢፋኖስ: The name “Stephanas” means crown; crowned (ፋና), HBN, a Christian convert of Corinth whose household Paul baptized
as the "first-fruits of Achaia." (1 Cor 1:16; 16:15)
Stephen ~ እስጢፋኖስ: The name “Stephen” means same as Stephanas, HBN, one of the seven deacons, who became a preacher of the
gospel. He was the first Christian martyr. His personal character and history
are recorded in Act 6. "He
fell asleep" with a prayer for his persecutors on his lips (Act 7:60), Devout men carried him to his grave (Act 8:2).
Suah ~ ሱዋ: “Suah” means sweeping, SBD, son of Zophah an Asherite. (1 Chr
7:36)
Succoth ~ ሱኮት: The name “Succoth” means tents; tabernacles (ድንኳን), HBN,

of in the account of the homeward journey of Jacob from Padan-aram. (Gen 33:17).
2. The
first camping-place of the Israelites when they left Egypt. (Ex 12:37; 13:20; Num 33:5,6)
Succoth-benoth ~ ሱኮትበኖት: tents of daughters, EBD,
supposed to be the name of a
Babylonian deity, the goddess Zir-banit, the wife of Merodach, worshipped by
the colonists in Samaria (2 Kin 17:30)
Susanna ~ ሶስና: The name “Susanna” means lily; rose; joy (አበባ), HBN,
1. The
heroine of the story of the Judgment of Daniel. (The book which gives an
account of her life is also called "The history of Susanna," and is
one of the apocryphal books of the Bible.)
2. One
of the women who ministered to the Lord. (Luk 8:3)
Susi ~ ሱሲ: The name “Susi” means horse; swallow;
moth, HBN, the father of Gaddi, who was one of the
twelve spies (Num 13:11)
Sychar ~ ሲካር: The name “Sychar” means end (ፍጻሜ), HBN, a place named only in (Joh 4:5).
Syene ~ ሴዌኔ: opening (ክፍተት),
EBD, (Ezk 29:10;30:6), a town of
Egypt, on the borders of Ethiopia, now called Assouan, on the right bank of the
Nile, notable for its quarries of beautiful red granite called
"syenite." It was the frontier town of Egypt in the south, as Migdol
was in the north-east.
Syntyche ~ ሲንጤኪን: Fortunate; affable (እድለኛ), EBD, a female member of the church at
Philippi, whom Paul beseeches to be of one mind with Euodias (Phil 4:2, 3)
Syracuse ~ ሰራኩስ: The name “Syracuse” means that draws violently (ሥራ ቀውስ), HBN, a city on the south-east coast of
Sicily, where Paul landed and remained three days when on his way to Rome (Act
28:12).
