Pallu ~ ፈሉስ: “Pallu” means distinguished (እውቅ), SBD, the second son of Reuben, father of Eliab, (Isa 6:14; Num 26:5, 8; 1 Chr 5:3) and founder of the family of Palluites.

Pamphylia ~ ጵንፍልያ: The name “Pamphylia” means a nation made up of every tribe (ድብልቅ ሕዝብ), HBN, Paul and his company, loosing from Paphos, sailed north-west and came to Perga, the capital of Pamphylia (Act 13:13,14) There were strangers from Pamphylia at Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost (Act 2:10).


Paphos ~ ጳፉ: The name “Paphos” means which boils, or is very hot (ትኩስ), HBN, the capital of the island of Cyprus, and therefore the residence of the Roman governor. It was visited by Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary tour (Act 13:6).

Paran ~ ፋራን: The name “Paran” means beauty; glory; ornament (ውበት), HBN, abounding in foliage, or abounding in caverns, (Gen 21:21)

Parbar ~ ፈርባር: The name “Parbar” means a suburb (ገጠር), HBN, a word occurring in Hebrew and Authorized Version only in (1 Chr 26:18) It would seem that Parbar was some place on the west side of the temple enclosure.

Parmashta ~ መርመሲማ: “Parmashta” means superior (የበላይ), SBD, one of the ten sons of Haman slain by the Jews in Shushan. (Est 9:9)

Parmenas ~ ጳርሜና: Constant (ዘላቂ), EBD, one of the seven "deacons" (Act 6:5).

Pashur ~ ጳስኮር: “Pashur” means freedom (ነጻነት), SBD

1.       One of the families of priests of the chief house of Malchijah. (1 Chr 9:12; 24:9; Neh 11:12; Jer 21:1; 38:1)

2.       Another person of this name, also a priest, and "chief governor of the house of the Lord," is mentioned in (Jer 20:1) He is described as "the son of Immer." (1 Chr 24:14)

Patara ~ ጳጥራ: “Patara” means city of Patarus, SBD, a Lycian city situated on the southwestern shore of Lycia, not far from the left bank of the river Xanthus. Patara was practically the seaport of the city of Xanthus, (Act 21:1, 2)

Pathros ~ ጳትሮስ: The name Pathros is derived from Pater (ፓተር) and ‘Ras’ (ራስ) the meaning is head of fathers.

Patmos ~ ፍጥሞ: The name “Patmos” means mortal (ምድራዊ), HBN, a small rocky and barren island, one of the group called the "Sporades," in the AEgean Sea. It is mentioned in Scripture only in (Rev 1:9).

Patriarch ~ አባቶች አለቃ: “Patriarch” means father of a tribe SBD, The name patriarch is derived from Pater (ፓተር) and ‘Ark’ (አርክ) the meaning is forefather.

... Even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils” (Heb 7:4)

Patrobas ~ ጳጥሮባ: “Patrobas” means paternal (አባታዊ), SBD, a Christian at Rome to whom St. Paul sends his salutation. (Rom 16:14),

Pedaiah ~ ፈዳያ: The name “Pedaiah” means redemption of the Lord (ፍዳ ህያው), HBN

1.       The father of Zebudah, who was the wife of Josiah and mother of king Jehoiakim (2 Kin 23:36).

2.       The father of Zerubbabel (1 Chr 3:17-19).

3.       The father of Joel, ruler of the half-tribe of Manasseh (1 Chr 27:20). (Neh 3:25).

4.       A Levite (Neh 8:4).A Benjamite (Neh 11:7).

Pekah ~ ፋቁሔ: The name “Pekah” means he that opens; that is at liberty, HBN, the son of Remaliah a captain in the army of Pekahiah, king of Israel, whom he slew, with the aid of a band of Gileadites, and succeeded. on the throne (2 Kin 15:25). Seventeen years after this he entered into an alliance with Rezin, king of Syria, and took part with him in besieging Jerusalem (2 Kin 15:37; 16:5).

Pekahiah ~ ፋቂስያስ: “Pekahiah” means whose eyes Jehovah opened (ህያው የዳነው፣ ዓይኑን ያበራለት), SBD, son and successor of Menahem was the 17th king of the separate kingdom of Israel, (2 Kin 15:23-26).

Pekod ~ ፋቁድ: The name “Pekod” means noble; rulers (ገዥ), HBN, an appellative applied to the Chaldeans. (Jer 50:21; Ezk 23:23).

1.       Son of Hananiah the son of Zerubbabel. (1 Chr 3:21)

2.       One of the captains of the marauding band of Simeonites who in the reign of Hezekiah made an expedition to Mount Seir and smote the Amalekites. (1 Chr 4:42)

3.       One of the heads of the people, and probably the name of a family who sealed the covenant with Nehemiah. (Neh 10:22)

4.       The son of Benaiah. and one of the princes of the people against whom Ezekiel was directed to utter the words of doom recorded in (Ezk 11:5-12)

Peleg ~ ፋሌቅ: “Peleg” means division, part (ክፍል), SBD, son of Eber and brother of Joktan. (Gen 10:25; 11:16).

Pelethites ~ ፈሊታውያን: The name “Pelethites” means judges(መኳንንት); destroyers, HBN, David's bodyguard, (2 Sam 8:18; 20:7, 23 Kin 1:38, 44; 1 Chr 18:17).

The name which Jacob gave to the place in which he had wrestled with God, “And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face and my life is preserved.” (Gen 32:30)

Peninnah ~ ፍናና: “Peninnah” means coral or pearl (እንቁ), SBD, one of the two wives of Elkanah. (1 Sam 1:2)

Pentecost ~ በዓለ ኀምሳ: The name “Pentecost” means fiftieth (አምሳኛ), HBN, found only in the New Testament (Act 2:1; 20:16; 1 Cor 16:8),

The day of Pentecost is noted in the Christian Church as the day on which the Spirit descended upon the apostles, and on which, under Peter's preaching, so many thousands were converted in Jerusalem (Act 2).

Penuel ~ ጵኒኤል: Face of God (የጌታ ፊት), EBD, a place not far from Succoth, on the east of the Jordan and north of the river Jabbok. It is also called "Peniel." Here Jacob wrestled (Gen 32:24-32) "with a man" ("the angel", Hosea 12:4. Jacob says of him, "I have seen God face to face") "till the break of day."

Peor ~ ፌጎር: The name “Peor” means hole; opening (ጎድጓዳ), HBN, a mountain peak in Moab belonging to the Abarim range, and near Pisgah, to which, after having ascended Pisgah, the prophet Balaam was conducted by Balak that he might look upon the whole host of Israel and curse them. (Num 23:14, 28)

Perazim ~ ፐራሲም: “Perazim” means a breach (ክፍተት), SBD, Mount, a name which occurs in (Isa 28:21).

Peresh ~ ፋሬስ: The name “Peresh” means horseman (ፈረስ), HBN, the son of Machir by his wife Maachah. (1 Chr 7:16)

Perez ~ ፋሬስ: “Perez” means breach (ፈራሽ), SBD, The "children of Perez," or Pharez, the son of Judah, appear to have been a family of importance for many centuries. (1 Chr 27:3; Neh 11:4, 6)

Perga ~ ጴርጌን: The name “Perga” means very earthy (ምድራዊ), SBD, a city of Pamphylia, (Act 13:13).

Pergamos ~ ጴርጋሞን: The name “Pergamos” means height; elevation (ምጡቅ), HBN, the chief city of Mysia, in Asia Minor. One of the "seven churches" was planted here (Rev 1:11; 2:17).

Perida ~ ፍሩዳ: “Perida” means grain, kernel (ቅንጣት), SBD, The children of Perida returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel. (Neh 7:57)

Perizzites ~ ፌርዛውያን: Villagers; dwellers in the open country (መንደርተኛ), EBD; the Canaanitish nation inhabiting the fertile regions south and south-west of Carmel; "They were the graziers, farmers, and peasants of the time." They were to be driven out of the land by the descendants of Abraham (Gen 15:20; Ex 3:8, 17; 23:23; 33:2; 34:11). They are afterwards named among the conquered tribes (Jos 24:11). Still lingering in the land, however, they were reduced to servitude by Solomon (1 Kin 9:20).

Persia ~ ፋርስ: “Persia” means pure, splendid (ምርጥ), SBD, an ancient empire, extending from the Indus to Thrace and from the Caspian Sea to the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. (2 Chr 36:20),

Pharpar ~ ፋርፋ: The name “Pharpar” means that produces fruit (ፍራፍሬ), HBN, the second of the "two rivers of Damascus" --Abana and Pharpar --alluded to by Naaman. (2 Kin 5:12).

Phebe ~ ፌቤን: The name “Phebe” means shining; pure (ጽዱ), HBN, a "deaconess of the church at Cenchrea," the port of Corinth. Paul commended her to the Christians at Rome; "for she hath been," says he, "a succourer of many, and of myself also" (Rom 16:1, 2).

Philadelphia ~ ፊልድልፍያ: The name “Philadelphia” means love of a brother (ወንድማዊ ፍቅር), HBN, a city of Lydia in Asia Minor. It was the seat of one of the "seven churches" (Rev 3:7-12).

Philemon ~ ፊልሞና: The name “Philemon” means who kisses (ወዳጅ), HBN, an inhabitant of Colosse, and apparently a person of some note among the citizens (Col 4:9; Phil 1:2). He was brought to a knowledge of the gospel through the instrumentality of Paul (Phil 1:19), and held a prominent place in the Christian community for his piety and beneficence (Phil 1:4-7). He is called in the epistle a "fellow-labourer,"

Philetus ~ ፊሊጦስ: The name “Philetus” means amiable; beloved (ተወዳጅ), HBN, with Hymenaeus, at Ephesus, said that the "resurrection was past already" (2 Tim 2:17, 18).

Philip ~ ፊልጶስ: “Philip” means lover of horses (ፈረሰኛ), SBD, the apostle was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter, (Joh 1:44).

Philippi ~ ፊልጶስ: The name “Philippi” means same as Philip, in the plural (ፈረሰኛ), HBN, (named from Philip of Macedonia), a city of Macedonia, to the northwest of the island of Thasos which is twelve miles distant from its port Neapolis, the modernKavalla. (Act 16:9-40; 1 Thes 2:2).

Philistines ~ ፍልስጥኤም: The root word for Philistinesis ‘Flsetam’ (ፍልሰታም) the meaning is ‘immigrant’

It was divided into two parts, the Greater Phrygia on the south, and the Lesser Phrygia on the west. It is the Greater Phrygia that is spoken of in the New Testament. The towns of Antioch in Pisidia (Act 13:14), Colosse, Hierapolis, Iconium, and Laodicea were situated in it.

Pirathon ~ ጲርዓቶን: “Pirathon” means princely (ልዑላዊ), SBD, prince, or summit, a place "in the land of Ephraim" (Jud 12:15).

Pisgah ~ ፈስጋ: “Pisgah” means section, i.e. peak (ጫፍ), SBD, (Num 21:20; 23:14; 3:27; 34:1) a mountain range or district, the same as or a part of, that called the mountains of Abarim.

Pisidia ~ ጲስድያ: The name “Pisidia” means pitch; pitchy (ሜዳ), HBN, a district in Asia Minor, to the north of Pamphylia. The Taurus range of mountains extends through it. Antioch, one of its chief cities, was twice visited by Paul (Act 13:14; 14:21-24).

Pithom ~ ፊቶም: “Pithom” means the city of justice (ፍጹም), SBD, one of the store-cites Israelites for the first oppressor, the Pharaoh "which knew not Joseph." (Ex 1:11).

Pithon ~ ፒቶን: The name “Pithon” means mouthful; persuasion (ርቱዕ), HBN, one of the four sons of Micah, the son of Mephibosheth. (1 Chr 8:35; 9:41)

Potiphar ~ ጲጥፋራ: The name “Potiphar” means bull of Africa; a fat bull (የአፍራካ ወይፈን), HBN, an Egyptian name. Potiphar, with whom the history of Joseph is connected is described as an officer of Pharaoh chief of the executioners, an Egyptian." (Gen 39:1)

Potipherah ~ ጶጥፌራ: The name “Potipherah” means that scatters abroad, or demolishes, the fat, HBN, was priest or prince of On, and his daughter Asenath was given Joseph to wife by Pharaoh. (Gen 41:45, 50; 46:20)

Prisca ~ ጵርስቅላ: “Prisca” means ancient (ጥንታዊ), SBD, (2 Tim 4:19), the wife of Aquila. To what has been said elsewhere under the head of AQUILA the following may be added: We find that the name of the wife is placed before that of the husband in (Rom 16:3; 2 Tim 4:19) and in (Act 18:26)

Priscilla ~ ጵርስቅላ: The name “Priscilla” means same as Prisca, “Prisca” means ancient (ጥንታዊ), HBN, the wife of Aquila (Act 18:2), who is never mentioned without her. Her name sometimes takes the precedence of his (Rom 16:3; 2 Tim 4:19). She took part with Aquila (which see) in insturcting Apollos (Act 18:26).

Prochorus ~ ጵሮኮሮስ: “Prochorus” means leader of the chorus (የመዘምራን አለቃ), SBD, one of the seven deacons, being the third of the list, and named next after Stephen and Philip. (Act 6:5)

Puah ~ ፎሖ: “Puah” means splendid (ውብ), HBN

1.       The father of Tola, a man of the tribe of Issachar and judge of Israel after Abimelech. (Jud 10:1)

2.       The son of Issachar, (1 Chr 7:1).

3.       One of the two midwives to whom Pharaoh gave instructions to kill the Hebrew male children at their birth. (Ex 1:15)

Publius ~ ፑፕልዮስ: the name “Publius” means common (የጋራ), HBN, the chief man --probably the governor-of Melita, who received and lodged St. Paul and his companions on the occasion of their being shipwrecked off that island. (Act 28:7)

Pudens ~ ጱዴስ: The name “Pudens” means shamefaced (አፋራም), HBN, bashful, a Christian at Rome, who sent his greetings to Timothy (2 Tim 4:21)

Putiel ~ ፉትኤል: The name “Putiel” means God is my fatness, SBD, One of the daughters of Putiel was wife of Eleazar the son of Aaron, and mother of Phinehas. (Ex 6:25)

Puteoli ~ ፑቲዮሉስ: The name “Puteoli” means sulphureous wells, HBN, a city on the coast of Campania, on the north shore of a bay running north from the Bay of Naples, at which Paul landed on his way to Rome, Here he tarried for seven days (Act 28:13, 14).
